#BookChat BREAK FROM YOU by Rebecca Green Gasper #YA

Love shouldn't hurt this much...

Brooke Myers wants to believe she has it all: the perfect guy, the perfect relationship, the perfect life. She wants to believe it so much that she's willing to overlook the fear, the isolation, and the pain her boyfriend has caused her. She knows it isn't right but tells herself that love isn't always easy. However, when a fire destroys the restaurant during homecoming dinner, she forms an instant bond with the boy who saves her, one her boyfriend wouldn’t like. With the pain of a concussion reminding her of how bad things can get, she is forced to re-evaluate the relationship she has with her boyfriend and face the ghosts that haunt her. Brooke once believed love was all it took…but is it enough? Is it truly love when you've lost yourself in it?

From the Author:
The inspiration for Break From You started with a dream about a fire, a cowboy, and another element I can’t tell you about because it will give the story away. (I know, a dream, very clique.) Eventually the idea developed into a story about teen dating abuse and became Brooke’s story. I ended up doing a lot of research about dating abuse, abusers, and victims

Readers' Reactions:
"Rebecca Green Gasper captures the utter fear and lack of self-worth that develops in girls who are the victims of teen dating abuse. While it would be easy to insist that Brooke break up with Drew, Rebecca shows us the cycle of fear and co-dependence which many women and girls find themselves in. Break from You is a definite must-read, whether you're the victim of teen dating abuse or not. " Susan Oloier author of Outcast.

"A touching story every teen girl needs to hear." Patrick Dawson, author of Lessons in the Journey.

Behind the Scenes:
A lot of research went into developing and writing Break From You, and so did a lot of rewrites. At times, I found myself struggling with Brooke's emotions. Her decisions for staying with her abusive boyfriend are hard to understand and to write a character that seems weak (yet is very strong) can be hard. But as I did my research and found out that 1 in 3 teens are in an abusive relationship, I knew Brooke’s story needed to be told.
