There were two rules for #FlirtSteamyReads, well, actually three if you count the heat level. The purpose is to finish a novella and submit it to a boxed set containing other sports novellas.
1. Novella around 20,000 words.
2. Sports themed. Either the hero or heroine is involved in athletics or organized sports team
We had two months to write our novellas. The first one I did was Played by Love, about a soccer goalie and a girl into dressing up in costumes. I finished the novella and decided to publish it because it is linked with my friend Dani Evan's upcoming book The Next Contestant. I didn't want to tie it to the multiple-author boxed set and confuse readers, so I published it and am waiting for my friend to publish her book.
Once I finished Played by Love, I got on a roll. The class was already half over, but I was able to write another 20,000 word novella, Playing the Rookie, about a rookie baseball pitcher and a girl trying to get over her last relationship. This story turned out hotter and more erotic than Played by Love, and I submitted it to the boxed set evaluators with my fingers crossed.
Since I was on a roll, I started Playing Without Rules, about a veteran relief pitcher and the girl he left behind. I'm not finished with it yet, but got the idea to do a hockey romance, Playing on Ice, which I have to get to after my Christmas novella that I just started this weekend.
So, long story short, I'm having lots of fun writing shorter, more structured romance novellas. They teach me to be organized, not wander off the path, and write tight and efficient, while still getting the characters' core emotions and arcs completed.
