Title: The Salty Carmel Christmas
Author: Barbara Lohr
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
A heartwarming story about a young college woman finding her place in life, between her school friends and the mistakes she made in college and her family back in her hometown.
Rachel has big problems: debts, failing grades, and a recent breakup that left her partying when she should have been studying. She wasn't looking forward to Christmas break back home in Paris, Indiana where everyone knew everyone else. For one, her mother is ill and her brother is painting the town red. Problems are piled up and money is tight.
However, during the turmoil and troubles, one guy, the one who was always around to help fix her computer or look at her car, Eli, was there to help and give her hope. The troubles don't go away, but Rachel, her mother, and brother are brought closer through the trials, sweetened by some Salty Carmel candy that Eli's mother makes. They have their family traditions and enjoy a close, although unorthodox, Christmas together.
And through it all, Eli is there, and Rachel makes some decisions. She's still uncertain about the direction of her life, and Eli is uncertain about his, but they have hope that they will be together to face whatever life throws at them.
A sweet and charming story, although not one-hundred-percent a romance. It was more of a story of family, finding your way in life, love, hope, and sticking with those who care and love. I did feel the ending was rushed and it somewhat took away the sweetness. Maybe because it's a novella, and I felt the setup at the hotel was unnatural and too large of a jump in their relationship. But ultimately it was a feel good story and I'm looking forward to the next story she has previewed at the end.
I'm not a big candy maker, but the scrumptious recipe for salty caramel candy is included.
