Title: Insanity Claus
Author: Carolyn Hughey
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Part family drama and part romance, Insanity Claus captures the struggles of a grieving widow, Mallory, with two daughters. One is innocent and cheerful, but the other blames her mother for her father's death. Mallory's trying to keep everything going, including running a Christmas gift shop during an economic downturn. She doesn't need or want any distractions, least of all the handsome stranger, A.J. Miller, who develops a liking for her.
A.J. comes on really strong and freaks Mallory out with his talk about kismet, fate, and love at first sight. Mallory is charmed but can't decide if A.J. is for real or not. She's already lost so much in her life and does not want to get her hopes up only to lose it again.
The tension in this story does not come from the romance. A.J. is straight forward with Mallory and shows his feelings early. Mallory also is cautiously optimistic and returns his feelings. The problem is Mallory's older daughter and her anger at her mother. Mallory isn't sure she can handle the situation and asks A.J. to back off. However, the reader knows A.J. is planning a surprise, so there's not much to worry about on that side.
The emotional drama comes from Mallory's older daughter and how she deals with the guilt of knowing too much about her father's activities. Everything is solved in time for Christmas Eve and A.J., of course, makes a grand entrance and sweeps everyone off their feet.
This is a real feel-good story and will have you rooting for Mallory's family to get the closure and happiness they deserve.
